About Field Hockey in Denmark

3 clubs play field Hockey in Denmark: Black Swans, Hockeyklubben Odin and Københavns Hockeyklub. They train at Valby Idrætspark. Training is on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Clubs train in Copenhagen and Odense.

Field hockey is played by a large part of the world and by a small, tight part of Denmark, which is a good combination if you have moved here from India, Pakistan, the Netherlands, Germany or the UK. The basics click quickly once somebody shows you how to hold the stick.

The outdoor season runs spring and autumn, with indoor hockey filling the winter months in a hall.

A first field hockey session is stick work and short passing drills, usually on artificial turf. If you have played before, the club will see it in ten minutes and put you with people at your level. If you have not, you spend the session learning to move the ball.

Danish sport is organised in foreninger — member-run clubs rather than commercial gyms. You pay a kontingent, usually once or twice a year, and that membership is what gives you training, coaching and a place in the club. A prøvetræning — a trial session — comes first, and it costs nothing.

You do not have to show up alone

Some of the clubs on this page have a club buddy who meets you at your first session.

Good to know

Do I need to speak Danish?

No. You book in English, your confirmation email is in English, and every club listed here has signed up to a platform whose whole purpose is welcoming people who are new to Denmark. Training itself may still be in Danish — say that you are new and people switch.

Is the first session really free?

Yes. A trial session booked here costs nothing. You are not signing up for a membership by booking one, and nobody asks for card details.

What should I bring?

Sportswear, shin protection if you already own some, and trainers or turf shoes. Clubs usually have a spare stick for a first session.

What happens after I book?

You get a confirmation email, and the club is told that you are coming. If you need to change the date or cancel, the email has a link for both.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You can add one guest when you book, and they get their own invitation by email.

How does membership work in a Danish club?

Danish clubs are foreninger — member-run associations, not commercial gyms. After the free trial you join by paying a kontingent, usually once or twice a year, and that is what covers training and coaching for the season.

When can I start?

The outdoor season runs spring and autumn, with indoor hockey filling the winter months in a hall.
